But with the desktop version of Scrivener…it’s a big nope.įriends, allow me a moment of tough love: if you are working on something you actually care about, you have to know where it’s saved at the very least. And if you don’t have the Scrivener iOS app syncing with Dropbox or aren’t manually backing up your files, that is the case there (I can go into the iOS version more in another post). Because with mobile apps, often you will lose your local data if you delete the app. In a world where people are increasingly working on phones and other mobile devices, the confusion isn’t too surprising. Yet many people believe that their work resides within the software or a cloud server connected to an account which leads to a lot of confusion about upgrades, syncing projects between devices, backups, and more. You set the save location when you create a new project, even. That’s because Scrivener is file-based software, much like the traditional Microsoft Word (Office 365 is, of course, cloud-based). The answer to all of these questions is NO. Maybe you’ve had one of these questions: if I upgrade to Scrivener 3, will I lose my work? If I have to delete and re-download Scrivener, will all of my projects be gone? I’m being asked to re-enter my license-does that mean all of my work has been erased? My Recent Projects list is empty-is my manuscript gone forever?! I am amazed by how many people are writing novels, short stories, PhD theses, extensive research papers, and memoirs and make this critical mistake: not knowing where their files are saved. I always recommend shopping secondhand/locally first when possible, but if you are purchasing online, I appreciate you using my link.
